Porsche 356 A (T2) LHD Convertible D by Drauz 1959

Porsche 356 A (T2) Convertible D, an extremely rare opportunity.

Serious offers considered, this 356 is not repeatable.

Worldwide export, shipping, Nationwide delivery.

Our 356 expert Graham Kidd has inspected this in great detail and rates it highly. It appears to be extraordinarily original.

We think it has all original panels and believe this was a very fine example prior to a highly detailed restoration and welcome your detailed inspection. We believe the doors, engine lid, trunk lid, latches/hinges, fuel tank, floors, sills and jacking points appear to us original and we see no evidence of prior accident damage.  The chassis, engine and transmission numbers match the Kardex.  Wheels are period correct and date marked 10/58, the electrics remain as 6 volts. Finished in its original colour of  Ruby red (5702).

The bodywork has exceptionally sharp lines and panel gaps, whilst the chrome, hood and upholstery are also looking good.  It presents beautifully close up and drives equally well. We grade our classics, 1 to 5 and whilst no cars (even new) are ‘perfect’, all things considered, we think this deserves to be given a 5. Your inspection is welcomed.

Delivered by Rittersbacher of Kaiserlautern Germany in January 1959.  Fitted with a 60 bhp 1,582 cc (Type 616/1) with twin Zenith carburettors and 4 speed manual gearbox.

1,331 ‘D’ were produced between August 1958 and September 1959, making them one of the rarest ‘production’ Porsche 356. Whilst usual coachbuilders Reutter continued with their own 356 A cabriolet bodywork, they were unable to meet the demand from Porsche to build a European friendly replacement for the Speedster. And so, well respected open-top car designers Drauz of Heilbronn, South West Germany were called upon to produce an alternative.

Offering a touch more comfort and refinement than the outgoing Speedster model, it featured a taller windscreen (which was still removable for ‘race’ weekends!), wind-up windows, improved hood structure and padded seats. Porsche sales literature described the new Convertible D as “a dynamic car of beautiful proportions. Extra light and low in design for competition and pleasure driving”. This is a piece of automotive art that could take you on long-distance tours and would be welcome at any event.
