Porsche 911 Backdate 3.6 LHD coupe 1988

Porsche 911 Backdate 3.6 LHD coupe 1988

This 911 has a lot going for it; old school looks, but modern performance.

It is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Looking like a sedate vintage Porsche with the backdated bodywork, but hidden underneath it is packing a real punch.

Based on a 1988 G series coupe, you see the nicely done backdated bumpers, lights and trims, but the story does not end there. A previous owner has continued spending time and money on it. Noteworthy too, is how complete a transformation has been done, with the neat finish to the sills, the chrome window surrounds, bright alloy engine grille and the opening rear quarter lights of the earlier cars.

In the rear, under the flat decklid and replacing its original 3.2, sits a 964 engine. These 3.6 twin spark motors, even when standard, had a healthy 250 bhp and loads of torque. Combine engine with the G50 transmission and the significant reduction in overall weight, it really makes this 911 a retro rocketship. Because this is a computer (ECU) controlled engine, it starts easily hot or cold and behaves impeccably.

To keep things under control at speed, the brakes are also from the 964, with four piston alloy calipers and larger discs, whilst Bilstein suspension looks after handling.

The interior has had the backdate treatment too, with full leather reclining bucket seats, roll top headrests, leather dash, basket weave centre trim, retro ivory white headliner and RS style door trims.  It rides on lovely 17” Fuchs style wider rims, giving clearance for the brakes and a wider choice of performance tyres.

Originally supplied new in the US, this 911 was modified some while ago whilst in the US, and the beauty of it, is that the expensive work has already been done. The bodywork, the interior, exterior trims, brakes, wheels and engine would add up to an embarrassing amount that a previous owner has invested.

The black metallic paintwork presents nicely, as does the black leather interior. The great thing with these ‘hot rod’ Porsche is  that people are free to do as they want, to make  them entirely personal.
