The very first pre-launch RHD 951 (944) Turbo cabriolet?
Following research on the internet, it would seem that this Porsche (VIN 003) precedes all other known RHD 944 Turbo cabrio. It was given its pre-delivery inspection in October of 1990 by the Porsche Factory long before the model was officially announced and long before production began in February 1991.
Porsche must make cars prior to the new model launch in order to evaluate and in order to use for PR work. The VIL on ‘003’ label bears the unusual code 719 (special construction). Although we cannot establish the real meaning of 719, pre-production cars were known to be constructed in a Special Works department. We do not know what duties this car performed.
What is generally accepted is that here in the UK there were approximately 50 C16 RHD starting at VIN 0061, with 100 RHD examples built in total from February ’91 through to April ’91. Only 36 are recorded in the UK today. Records from 1990 were not always entirely accurate and Porsche did build some cars that are little known.
This car was owned new by the factory, with the pre-delivery service performed at Porsche Stuttgart in October of 1990. It was then sold by them via the official UK importer, AFN Reading in December 1992 to Mr Livesey of London. At the time it had approximately 6,000 miles.
The first owner then passed it back to AFN who then sold it to Mr Pearce in March of 1994. The 944 practically disappeared from view with Mr Pearce, living all its life garaged both here in the UK and for the last 12 years, in Spain where it remained essentially unused but occasionally driven.
Because it has been garaged for 25 years it does not have the usual corrosion, it’s never been accident damaged or modified.
It has received a full and detailed recommissioning with us here in our workshop. This means that we have checked, inspected, changed and adjusted everything we could. It has new tyres, new factory correct blue convertible roof, new belts, alignment and is in our view, ready to go. Fully valeted inside, outside and underneath.

- Compared to the Coupe model, Cabriolet’s windshield is lowered about 6 cm (2.4 in) and raked back to reduce the wind noise when the top is down.
- Only RoW (Rest of World) models were made, none imported to the USA markets.
