Under the Lights: 1967 Porsche 911 S

THE ONLY LIMIT IS YOUR ADVENTURE

A Williams Crawford feature supporting the Tide Media Under the Spotlight film with Adrian Crawford and Monty.

There are some Porsche you admire because they’re perfect.

And then there are cars like this.

Our 1967 Porsche 911 S competition car has spent decades doing what an early 911 was designed to do: racing, rallying, climbing hills, driving on snow and ice and crossing countries.

It’s not a museum piece. It’s an adventure waiting to happen.

That’s why Monty and I chose it for our latest Under the Spotlight film with Tide Media.

IMAGINE THE ROAD AHEAD

Picture an early morning somewhere in the Alps.

You’ve left the hotel before breakfast. The air is cold, the road is almost empty and ahead of you is one of those old mountain passes that you’ve seen in photographs of the Monte Carlo Rally.

You’re sitting behind that wonderful thin steering wheel. There’s a competition engine behind you, the road is getting tighter and the mountains are opening up ahead.

That’s where a car like this starts to make sense.

And it’s not simply about going fast. It’s the journey there. The villages you pass through. Stopping for fuel. Finding a little restaurant. Parking in the town square and immediately finding yourself talking to somebody who wants to know about the car.

That’s one of the great pleasures of competing with an old Porsche. You meet your kind of people.

A PASSPORT TO A DIFFERENT WORLD

Take a car like this into Europe and people respond to it.

They smile. They wave. Children point at it. People who remember these cars when they were new come over and tell you their stories.

Then you arrive at an event and meet another group of enthusiasts from all over the world who have made exactly the same slightly mad decision as you: they’ve brought an old car to drive properly.

The warmth and friendship surrounding historic motorsport is a huge part of its appeal.

You may arrive knowing nobody. You rarely leave that way.

And this little Light Yellow 911 S is a crowd favourite before you’ve even turned the key.

THEN YOU GET TO DRIVE IT

And that’s the other half of the story.

An early competition 911 is an absolute delight. It’s small. Light. Supremely nimble.

There’s tremendous traction from having the engine sitting over the driven rear wheels and, once you understand the car, you begin to work with it.

Brake. Turn it in. Feel the weight move. Pick up the throttle and use it to balance the car through the bend. Then plant it.

It’s wonderfully physical without needing enormous speed. The steering talks to you. The chassis moves. The engine responds.

You aren’t sitting there while computers decide what should happen next. You’re driving it.

THIS IS WHAT A 911 S WAS BORN INTO

There’s some lovely history behind all of this.

In 1967, Vic Elford competed in the Monte Carlo Rally in a Porsche 911 S, winning his class and finishing third overall. That same year he became European Rally Champion in a 911 S.

This was an era when Porsche competition meant extraordinary variety: rallying, circuit racing, hillclimbs, tarmac, gravel, snow and ice.

These cars weren’t designed to live permanently under covers. They were incredibly versatile competition machines.

Nearly 60 years later, that’s still the magic of an early competition 911.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT?

You could take it on a rally tour through the Alps. Enter a historic hillclimb. Go circuit racing. Take it ice driving. Use it on tarmac, gravel, snow or mountain roads.

Or simply drive across Europe to an event with a helmet and an overnight bag in the back.

You don’t have to be fighting for tenths of a second. You can be fighting for them if you want to. But you can also be there because the journey, the people, the places and the car itself are enormous fun.

The only limit is your adventure.

IS IT PERFECT?

No. And I’m rather pleased it isn’t.

It’s a 1967 Porsche 911 S competition car that has been competing for decades. It has a story. There are signs of its life because it has had one.

A perfect car can sometimes make you nervous. Where do I park it? Should I use it in the rain? What will another thousand miles do to its value?

This isn’t that Porsche. This is a car that makes you look at a map of Europe and wonder where you could go next.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT

In our latest Under the Spotlight film, Monty and I get around this wonderful old 911 and talk about the car, its competition life and why something like this can deliver an experience that a modern high-performance car simply can’t reproduce.

Watch the film. Turn the sound up. And perhaps allow yourself to dream a little.

Our 1967 Porsche 911 S competition car is currently for sale at Williams Crawford and ready for its next adventure.

UK, Europe or the other side of the world – we can help with the purchase and arrange worldwide shipping.

Where it goes next is entirely up to you.

No, this Porsche isn’t perfect. But it might be perfect for making dreams come true.
