Overview

Not all treasure is silver and gold….

Unusual specification, outstanding provenance and low ownership make this 911 quite remarkable.

Few classics from this era tick as many boxes as this Carrera 3.2 coupe, it has so many desirable attributes.

Beautiful baby blue paintwork, known officially as Glacier blue (code L32Z), was a roll-over colour from the previous year’s SC model, and was only available for the 3.2 in 1984.

The interior is finished in black, the front and rear seats are trimmed with ‘PORSCHE’ script cloth.

Further equipment includes:

  • 16 inch Fuchs alloy wheels.
  • Electric sunroof and black headliner.
  • Front spoiler with integrated fog lamps.
  • Rear ‘tea-tray’ spoiler.
  • Rear wiper.
  • Factory spec second rear foglamp.
  • Heated, electrically adjustable passenger wing mirror.
  • Panasonic CQ radio cassette with electric aerial.

The most recent keeper, who purchased this 911 in 1999, is only the 5th in the car’s history. It has driven fewer than 10,000 miles within those 25 years, yet with an unwavering service, maintenance, and MOT history.

Accompanied by a comprehensive folder of invoices and receipts from the beginning of its life back in 1984, two service books (the original and a second), plus 36 MOT certificates and numerous historic tax discs. Provenance like this is a precious part of this car’s history and is irreplaceable.

Supplied on the 1st January 1984 by Lancaster Garages (Colchester) Ltd, the official Porsche centre in Essex, the chassis number suggests a build date within the first 1,000 of Carrera 3.2 model production.

From a driving point of view, these first generation 3.2 hide a little-known benefit: more vigour. More torque (189 v 209 foot pounds), and significantly more power (from 204 bhp to 231 bhp) than the outgoing 3.0, but with no extra equipment to weigh them down.

Like the legendary 911 RS, they use the 915 5-speed transmission. Many people focus on the benefits of the later G50 transmission, though few have had extensive comparative experience of both 915 and G50 types. The 915 set up has a smaller and lighter clutch and flywheel. Weighing less, the transmission takes less to ‘turn’. For the driver, a 915 feels ever more alive. This car also has the transmission oil cooler, a feature deleted from the standard equipment in later models.
