Enjoy Driving? What is a hillclimb?

We support local motorsport, and have plenty of customers that enjoy testing themselves, and their Porsche, away from the public highway.

Last weekend was the 2024 Werrington Hillclimb, run by Plymouth Motor Club. Which is one of the many local events that welcome new competitors and is surprisingly accessible to those of you who love to drive.

In principle you can enter a standard road car, apply for a license from Motorsport UK, join a local motor club, and organise some safety clothing including a helmet. Numbers on the door, and you are ready for some real fun.

You could enter a GT3…but you don’t need to! Any healthy Porsche is going to work well. Your competitors will be warm and friendly, and happy to show you the ropes.

The Werrington Park event is run over an uphill tarmac driveway heading to Werrington House, and you finish time will be something between 30 seconds after you set off, through to about 50 seconds.

During that journey you have a fast, but probably not flat right hander, a kink left, over a cattle grid, and brake hard into a 90 degree left around the garden, then a right left past the house, and then a nearly flat left right kink onto the finish. Whatever Porsche you use you will be travelling beyond our max speed for the road.

You get a few runs of practice, and a couple of runs of competition, with the best time counting.

The paddock contains humble machinery along with some very special cars too, a Nissan Skyline with over a 1000hp might be beside an old Mini, the ex Prodrive Subaru was entered by Steve Furzland, who has decades of motorsport experience, yet nearby will be a first timer.

Our Macan was on track as a safety car, and that too would have been eligible to enter!

Typically, the 2 day event covered just about every type of British spring weather: the first day was bright, sunny, and all-around perfect hillclimb temperature, whereas the second saw a cold, overcast morning, followed by constant rain. But, despite the meteorological challenges, many on the second day managed to surpass their first day times.

The passion of all involved is very clear throughout. It generates an exciting and friendly atmosphere that the Plymouth Motor Club is noted for.

If you’re thinking of participating in any similar local event, we offer a range of motorsport and high-performance services to prepare you and your car for additional fun. What are you waiting for? Give us a call, and we will help. Visit our motorsport page here.
