Is the 356 Speedster the purest Porsche?

We are so lucky to experience Porsche like this. It’s a very rare treat and one to be savoured immediately it presents itself. Thats what we did today.

The near 70 year old piece of automotive art is far more than a masterpiece to hang on the wall.
Its in truth, a rewarding, entertaining and capable Porsche that one could enjoy for any special occasion.

And its a show stopper.

This 1957 model is attractive due to the simplicity of the form — the low, cut-down screen, the absence of ornamentation, those delicate curves of the body and the artfully designed dashboard. Every piece seems to have been designed and shaped with love.

This particular one, our resident World class expert Graham Kidd, gave it the thumbs up. Cars of this age vary in the quality and integrity of their restoration, their provenance and the attention to detail that often only the expert eye can see.

When like this, it’s pleasure, to both drive and enjoy gazing at. Even the doors shut with the thunk only a Porsche makes.

Completed on 22nd March 1957, chassis 83032 sits within the early production run of 356 A T1 Speedsters — a small group, with only around 590 to 600 produced during this early part of the model year and of course far fewer remain. Even within Speedster circles, early T1 examples have a particular appeal.

The Speedster story is well known, but it is worth revisiting. It was Max Hoffmann in America who persuaded Porsche that there was room for a lighter, simpler, more affordable sports car. What followed was a machine stripped back to its essentials — minimal trim, lightweight construction, and an honesty of purpose that defined early Porsche thinking.

At around 700 kilograms, there is very little between you and the road.

Modern cars are faster, undoubtedly. They are more capable, safer, and infinitely more complex. Yet very few deliver this degree of connection at entirely sensible road speeds.

It is a reminder that driving pleasure need not be complicated.
