There’s something slightly irrational about deciding to drive a near 30-year-old Porsche to Monte Carlo…in winter…with very little time to spare.

But that’s exactly what Richard did.

The plan was simple enough: head south to see the WRC Monte Carlo Rally. The reality, as always, was something else entirely. Long autoroute miles, changing weather, freezing alpine temperatures, and the kind of mountain roads that don’t offer much forgiveness.

From the moment Richard set off, the Porsche 993 reminded him of what this era of 911 is all about. There’s no hiding behind technology here. Everything you feel comes directly through the steering wheel, the pedals, and the seat beneath you. At speed on dry French autoroutes it felt planted, alive, and utterly at home. This is still very much a Porsche built to cover serious ground.

The real test came as the roads climbed. Snow appeared. Temperatures dropped. Grip became inconsistent. This is where you start questioning your choices, and your timing.

Yet mile after mile, the 993 kept delivering. It demanded concentration, yes…but it also rewarded it. The feedback, the balance, the sense of involvement made every section of road feel like part of the experience rather than something to simply get through.

Was it the easiest option? Definitely not.

Was it the right one? Without question.

Modern cars make journeys effortless. The 993 makes them memorable.
