The 987 Boxster/Cayman and 997 911 are the perfect storm of old-school driving feel and modern usability. Enthusiasts are waking up to their potential—and for most good examples, they feel undervalued. This could be the time to step in. Whether a Mezger-powered 997 Turbo or a 987 Boxster, to us good ones look like bargains.

Launched in the 2000s, these cars bridge an ideal era: refined engineering minus the weight of today’s tech-laden sports cars. Take a look at the power-to-weight—when you save weight, not only does it go up the road faster, but all responses are cleaner.

Hydraulic steering, naturally aspirated flat-sixes, manual gearboxes—in the 997 Turbo manual, the Mezger-derived twin-turbo flat-six delivers 480 hp and up to 680 Nm of overboost torque, more than enough to entertain and keep you occupied.

Whether a manual gearbox, Tiptronic or PDK, there is no question that these 996 and 997 models remain both usable and thoroughly enjoyable. You certainly get a more connected feel—something Porsche have had to work hard on to match with electronic steering.

These models have classic, muscular shapes that resist trends. Cayman and Boxster share a similar platform and a cohesive feel. A feeling of immediate balance and poise—something that none of their competitors can manage. Yet head for the Alps and you have a great travelling companion.

Moving to the rear-engined 911, these all exhibit to greater or lesser degrees the same basic feel: thrust from behind, leaving noise in the distance, with a superb front end and just a feeling of muscle.

We don’t need to really ‘sell’ the idea—most of our clients are pre-sold—but we do want to point out the value of buying the right example. That’s where paying a bit more from the likes of us, with knowledge, experience, expertise and support, can pay dividends.

Some of these models have already attracted collectors—usually the low-volume examples—but we have also sold the most beautiful early 986 to collectors who see the value in having something great, rare and special.

The market is definitely starting to wake up to the 987 and 997s. For years, European LHD values have been far ahead of ours. We predict they will harden and rise over time. Although it’s not the real reason we want one—that should be from your heart—knowing they will look after you reasonably in the pocket is a bonus.
