The Iconic Porsche 911 Carrera RS of 1973

One of the pleasures of this business is the chance to work with, and experience first-hand, some very special Porsche.

This video touches on the subtle differences that make up a 2.7 RS. These differences mean that a correct, accurate, and authentic example can command 4 to 5 times the price of a ‘normal‘ 1973 Porsche 911.

In 1973, If one wanted to compete, a largely showroom stock 911 was sufficient. But, Porsche have always had an eye on motorsport success, it’s part of the Porsche DNA. Evolution not revolution. The result was the RS.

To compete in the production car categories of the FIA a manufacturer had to have built a limited number of examples to the desired specification, and therefore, achieve homologation for that specification.

The changes to the regular 2.4 911 are subtle, but many. A combination of small improvements led to creating a 911 that was immediately competitive.

Remember, this is long before new GT cars were designed for collectors or investors. If one purchased a 911 RS in the day, the chance was that you would be heading for the start line, investment was not the driving force here. Winning was. It was the whole purpose of the car.

Power alone is not enough on rallies, races or hillclimbs (The European Hillclimb Championship in this era was considered extremely prestigious). A driver needs to have accessible power, a car that gives confidence, has a balance, responds to his inputs, and lasts the distance. That’s the RS.

Unlike a modern GT3, a high percentage of 2.7 RS would have been enrolled in competition, and those that were not on the start line would likely have been thoroughly enjoyed to the maximum on the road.

Here we have a restored example that remains a delight. In period photos we can find this particular car with numbers on the doors and waving a wheel through the corners. Can you imagine what stories there are behind the wheel of this RS?

We are fortunate to be able to drive and care for this one and others similar. It is brilliant. We love to see clients driving these and enjoying them. The unique features are vital to understand when looking after them, these details make the car perform, make it authentic and of course have significant effect on value. Graham is expert with them.

Our thanks to the owner, who entrusted his 911 with us. We love the experience.
