What an adventure!
What an adventure!
We took six cars to the XX Rally Clasico 2024 in Mallorca, with four classic 911’s including, Richard’s newly built red & white Group 4 car, and Adrian’s Blue 911 SC.
We brought all six back, and best of all…we left no paint in Mallorca. That in itself is a win!
Bear in mind we are competing at a high level with cars that are decades old, so it’s a testament to the durability of a 911, and of course the preparation of our team.
We had a few challenges along the way. Steve Morgan in the red 911 needed to urgently fly home, leaving his co-driver Richard Wise contemplating becoming a spectator. Then Glyn Thomas, the co-driver with Adrian, had to fly home with another family emergency. So, Richard Wise hopped in the right-hand seat to join Adrian as his co-driver.
The rally was over 2 and a half days, with the first two stages likely to be in the dark. Stage 1 was over 20km along the winding cliff road and into the valley from Andraix. The second was dark for everyone.
Day two was dry and included the magnificent stage of Sa Colobra (see in car footage below), where you climbed the mountain roads, and then ran down along a fast B-road to the finish. It was spectacular.
On day three we tackled a further 4 stages in the morning, plus two visits to a racetrack, but it was getting wetter and wetter by the minute with the roads turning into skating rinks, resulting in the last two stages being cancelled due to the torrential rain.
We were amongst some amazing cars on the rally, from the Pikes peak Audi Quattro and the Lancia Stratos of Seb Perez (overall winner), through to our long-term friend and customer, who I first dealt with 20 years ago, who brought along a sweet Renault Five all the way from Prague.
The ‘best choice’ of machine for this type of event?…it’s the 911. By far, the classic 911 was the machine of choice, most had 300hp or more. Fabulous power, light weight, traction, and nimble. Just the qualities that also make them brilliant on the road.
We have to praise our on-event service team, of Josh, Andy, Ian, Kris, Andrew, and Rupert, these guys were incredible. They worked through the night, in the rain, and they were always where we needed them, when we needed them…well done guys!
Also, praise for our team back at base who prepared the cars and provide the organisational support that allows us to participate. A massive thank you to all at Williams Crawford.

The Mitsubishi of Fordy/James was handicapped when they parked it balancing on a ledge over a ‘long drop’, reminiscent of the closing scenes in the original Italian Job.
