When Rare Really *Is*: This Porsche 356 Carrera Is One of Only 10 Right-Hand Drives Ever Built

Today we had the pleasure of reviewing one of the rarest Porsche 356s in existence—this extraordinary 1956 Porsche 356A Carrera GS, known among enthusiasts simply as a “four-cam.”

Joining me was our in-house Porsche guru, Graham Kidd, whose depth of knowledge on these specialist models is second to none. His insights into this car are invaluable, and his enthusiasm is as infectious as ever.

A Racing Heart—and a Vanishing Breed

April 1956 marked a significant milestone for Porsche: just 439 Carrera 356A GS models were produced in total. Of those, it’s believed only 10 were built in right-hand drive. How many of those survive today? No one knows for sure—but it’s thought to be just a handful.

This particular car is even more exclusive: one of just four RHD cars delivered new to the UK, and number 3 of that original 4. It’s believed that only two of those still remain on UK soil.

And unlike most early Carreras, this one still retains its original matching-numbers four-cam engine—the legendary Type 547, developed by Porsche’s racing department.

What Makes the Four-Cam So Special?

The “four-cam” nickname refers to its complex, competition-derived engine—an engineering masterpiece of its time. Most 356s came with simpler pushrod engines, but this one was built for the track. It’s rare to find one at all—rarer still to find one that hasn’t lost its original powerplant along the way.

Many of these cars were raced hard in period, suffering crash damage or engine failure. As a result, they were often rebuilt using whatever components were available. That’s what makes this example so unusual: its originality and integrity have been preserved, and that’s reflected throughout the car.

Restored to Exceptional Standard

We’ve recently recommissioned the car after a period of inactivity, and we’ve had the chance to examine it thoroughly. The quality of the prior restoration is superb, completed with sensitivity and skill, making this a car fit for the world’s most serious collections.

From the engine bay to the bodywork, the attention to detail is evident. It’s not just for show—this Carrera is ready to drive, enjoy, or exhibit.

It Doesn’t Just Run—It Sings

Start it up, and you’ll instantly understand why the four-cam is so revered. There’s a unique sharpness and metallic purity to its note. It doesn’t sound like a regular 356—it sounds like a Porsche with intent. It’s mechanical music, and you feel it as much as you hear it.

Soon to Be Launched—But Where Will It Go Next?

We’ll be offering this car for sale soon to a global audience. Its significance, rarity, and condition make it a car of international appeal—and it could easily find a home anywhere in the world.

Keep an eye on our website for full launch details, or register your interest now to be first in line.
