356 Speedster by 'Vintage Speedsters'

Uber cool classic with unmistakable Speedster style.

At first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was the real thing – all but the most knowledgeable would be fooled. The stance, the shape, the detailing – all scream 356 Speedster.

But unlike the precious few originals that remain, this well-executed replica offers the freedom to drive, to enjoy, and to use, with none of the anxiety (or the price tag) that comes with a genuine example.

Built by Vintage Speedsters, recognised as the number one builder of replica 356 Speedsters in the USA, this car delivers the look, the feel, and the sound of a 1950s icon, without the fear of devaluing a six-figure investment every time you turn the key.

Each replica is constructed on a shortened VW Beetle floor pan, reinforced with a custom built, jig welded steel subframe.

A hand-laid fibreglass body allows for a strong and lightweight build that closely emulates the original Porsche 356 Speedster design.

This RHD example carries the identity of its 1968 VW Beetle donor and was imported in May 2013 showing just 71 miles on what is believed to be an upgraded 1,914 cc air-cooled flat-four engine on twin EMPI carbs, paired with a 4-speed manual gearbox. The soundtrack comes courtesy of a stainless steel Abarth-style single outlet exhaust.

Originally owned by John McGurk of McGurk Performance Cars – a dealership representing Vintage Speedsters in the UK, importing and selling on this side of the water. They catered to enthusiasts seeking authentic-looking and reliable replicas, ensuring that these vehicles met UK standards, including an MOT test.

Finished in glossy black with chrome detailing, a single driver’s side mirror, and period-style gold ‘Speedster’ and ‘1600 Super’ badges, plus vintage rear grille badges. It sits on 16-inch wheels with chrome ‘Super’ hubcaps, each bearing coloured Porsche crest centre caps.

Inside, a Moto-Lita-style wood-rimmed steering wheel and three-dial Speedster-style dash, complete with a Tag Heuer–inspired double stopwatch mount. The interior is trimmed in contrasting tan leather on the ‘Carrera’-style seats, door cards, dash top, and handbrake gaiter — all set against black carpets.

Comes with matching hood tonneau and a wet weather set-up, all ready for when the British weather tries to upset your day out.

Following our initial inspection, Williams Crawford carried out maintenance in preparation for sale. This included an oil and filter change, carburettor adjustment and engine tune, front suspension check and set-up, and brake inspection and adjustment, along with attention to various minor details and fine-tuning to ensure everything performs as it should.
