There’s some exceptional engineering and an extraordinary amount of technology beneath the surface, but in relatively simple terms the M Hybrid system combines a 4.4 litre twin-turbocharged V8 with an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed M Steptronic transmission, producing a combined 717 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque.

Drive is delivered through the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, with the ability to vary the distribution between front and rear axles depending on conditions and the selected driving mode.

The result is 0–62 mph in just 3.6 seconds, with a normally limited top speed of 155 mph increased to 190 mph courtesy of this car’s M Driver’s Package.
