Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 SSE Supersport (M491) Targa 1986

The 80’s Carrera 3.2 for the 21st century.

Aesthetically, from every angle, it is beautiful. And then, you drive it; it has exceptional suspension, additional electric power steering, and a rebuilt 915 gearbox, all subtle upgrades, but they make a world of difference.

Add into the mix the fact that this is a RHD, 1986 Targa, with option M491, Super Sport Equipment, and now we’ve got something very, very special.

It’s the iconic 911 silhouette, the poster you had on your wall, the Porsche you dreamed of. Wide, turbo wheel arches, a big tea tray wing, and gleaming Guards red paintwork; it’s enough to make you weak at the knees.

Porsche introduced the Turbo Look in 1984. They were special builds, and their success kick-started the Special Wishes department that still exists today.

Essentially, the SSE and subsequently, the Supersport, are normally aspirated Turbos! Wide body, spoilers, 16 inch Fuchs alloys, big brakes and uprated suspension. Costing an additional £10,000 over a standard Carrera 3.2, the Supersport option was an expensive choice, and undoubtedly explains why so few were built.

Production numbers for UK RHD examples vary from source to source, but it is suggested just 74 for the 1984-1987 SSE run (of which, this Targa is one of 17), followed by a further 53 1987-1989 Supersport. Whatever the exact figures, they are few and far between, making them a highly desirable edition to any garage.

This 1986 model year example was supplied in November 1985 by OPC Chelsea, with the all important M491 Sport Equipment option.

Benefiting from an uninterrupted history, with reference to at least 29 services, accompanied by a folder of invoices and receipts, plus 21 MOT certificates.

Maintenance and upkeep have been paramount throughout the lifetime of the Targa, and in the last 3,000 – 4,000 miles, huge additional investments have been made. Detailed invoices, totalling more than £35,000, account for, amongst other things, a full gearbox rebuild, replacement clutch, EZ electric power steering upgrade, KW V3 suspension, new brakes, refurbished Targa roof and new black carpets throughout.

The result is a classic Porsche that not only looks every inch the red carpet super star, but is an absolute joy on the road. We think it is probably the best we have driven!
