Overview

This 911 isn’t pretending, it’s the real deal.

There’s no illusion here; this one has genuine competition pedigree, engineered to ST specification and raced in anger.

It’s the kind of Porsche that backdated builds aspire to be. Now with a sharp suit and a few manners instilled, it will thrill you on road as well as on track.

Make no mistake, under its relatively unassuming aesthetics, it is still a race car at heart. It’s raw, light, agile and fast. There is nothing inconspicuous about the way it gets up the road…..

Originally delivered to the US as a 1973 911 S, the car was converted to full ST specification in the early 1990s. It was fitted with glass fibre body panels, lightweight doors, plexiglass windows, a fuel cell, and a roll cage. Finished in dark blue Sunoco livery, it competed in historic racing events across the United States, regularly running against Corvettes and Mustangs.

Part of the ‘ST’ spec is a glorious, free-revving ‘short-stroke’ 2,454cc. Utilising ‘E’ crankcases, a counterweighted 66mm forged crank, 89mm cylinders and forged pistons, 906 spec cams assembled with “S” spec twin plug heads, along with a Bosch mechanical fuel injection system and much more.

Braking is handled by adjustable Bremtec calipers, six-piston at the front, four-piston at the rear, with competition pads. The suspension includes adjustable roll bars and is set up with race-oriented geometry. The gearbox is a close-ratio unit, well suited to fast driving.

Arriving at Williams Crawford in its unrestrained competition guise, our goal was to refine it, preserving its race-bred raw character whilst unlocking its potential as a road-going machine.

Our refurbishments included widened rear wings to accommodate the 11×15 inch wheels, along with the return of steel doors and proper glass. The body was repainted in its original factory Ivory colour, and the interior finished with crisp oatmeal carpets and a black headliner.

For convenience and comfort, the original race seats were replaced with beautifully trimmed buckets in Nutmeg brown leather and Pepita cloth. The additional latest-in-safety Heigo rear cage is both a nod to its history, and a (beneficial) reminder of its present-day capabilities.

With values of the remaining factory-built examples and factory-supplied ‘ST kit’ cars built in period now stretching into seven figures, this 911 makes perfect sense. It is an authentic taste of one of the most iconic air-cooled Porsche racers from a golden age of motorsport.

It is one-of-one; 911 like this seldom become available.

Building to this specification requires deep pockets and patience. Here, the hard work is already been done; it’s ready to be used, to be driven—and to be appreciated by someone who understands exactly what it is.
