Overview

Zesty classic seeks motorsport thrills.

With a powerful motor, perfectly balanced mid-engine layout, low centre of gravity and carefully considered suspension upgrades, this 914 is all ready to have a go.

Classic rally, hillclimb, track day, car meet, Sunday cruise; it’s a great alternative to a 911 or transaxle Porsche.

Rarely seen in the UK in any shape or form, this homage to the factory-built racers of the 1970’s goes as well as it looks.

The build list is long and detailed, current specification is as follows:

Bodywork:

  • Signal orange GT bodywork upgrade
  • Steel GT arches from Restoration Design
  • Steel flared sills
  • GRP front and rear GT bumpers from FSH

Engine and transmission:

  • 1980 3.0 litre, air cooled 6 cylinder SC engine, Type 930/07 (USA/Canada), number 6400156 originally making 178 hp, now suggested 230 bhp
  • High compression 3.0 litre 6 cylinder on Weber 40 IDAs
  • 9:5:1 JE pistons
  • Mahle cylinders
  • ‘S’ cams
  • K&N’s with watershields
  • Carrera tensioners
  • Gearbox upgraded from type 901 to 915 (converted to 916 spec by Mike Bainbridge).

Suspension and handling:

  • SC front suspension
  • Koni shocks and adjustable springs
  • Elephant Racing tie rod ends and bushings
  • Anti bumpsteer kit
  • Weltmeister adjustable front sway bar
  • Factory rear bar
  • Full GT reinforcing kit (chassis strengthening plates, plus reinforced rear trailing arms)

Brakes and wheels:

  • Alloy ‘S’ front calipers
  • PMB 914-6 GT rears
  • Drilled and vented discs
  • Rear wheels are rare 8×15 Minilites
  • Front wheels are 7×15 Fuchs
  • Toyo R888Rs tyres

Miscellaneous:

  • Patrick Motorsports GT front oil cooler
  • Holley Red fuel pump
  • Dansk 62 litre fuel tank
  • Hi Torque starter motor
  • Classic Retrofit CDI+ box
  • Safety Devices roll cage
  • RennShift short shift kit
  • Silver Dot 911 gauges, 10k tacho
  • FEV ADS gas fire extinguisher
  • BF Torino 914 GT seats in leather/corduroy
  • 3/5 point race harnesses
  • Plumbed in rally intercom kit with Bluetooth connectivity; allows you to listen to the radio and take handsfree calls through the earphones.
  • GT front tow hook
  • Bosch cut off switch
  • AutoAtlanta gas strut conversion for rear boot lid
  • 914 Rubber LED headlamp conversion
  • 2-in-3-out silencer

US supplied, this 914 arrived from Texas to UK shores in February 2016.

Already sporting the 1980 3.0 SC engine with JE pistons and some type of sport cam, the original 2.0 litre 4 cylinder had been swapped out some time in the 1980’s.

From the moment it arrived, work began to transform it. Over the following 3.5 years, the 914 slowly evolved into this exceptional GT styled pocket rocket we see today.

Accompanied by an abundance of invoices and receipts illustrating the vast amount of time and expenditure afforded to this project.

Bodywork and paint were managed by Richard ‘Moggy’ Morgan; now famous for his Electric Classic Cars company and Vintage Voltage TV show, this 914 was his final petrol project.

This 914 offers a very engaging drive. It is responsive, quick, rewarding and, most of all, terrific fun.
