Adrian's take on the used car market
May 2025
There is no doubt this is a busy time of year for us, and that’s thanks to you guys…the sun’s out and the roads are reasonably free from holiday traffic, so there is no better time to be in a lovely Porsche.
When I first started with selling Porsche in earnest, the internet was in its infancy, but nowadays we use it for everything – however, I note much of the video content is sensationalistic nonsense, and it’s either disaster or drama, but I guess that’s what sells. It means that we cannot rely upon the ‘net’.
A few things recently popped onto my phone that really made me think. One was the doom and gloom of the used car market, especially classic cars. Another was some expert buying a high mileage 996 from auction which turned into a disaster – we could have foreseen that from Cornwall. His assessment was wrong, his subsequent diagnosis wrong, and the only thing he got right was creating content people would watch.
So, this week we look at the market and our experience of it currently.
We have never been busier, and looking at the cars we have sold over the last 4 weeks, over half were classics, and the remainder was split equally between ‘moderns’ and ‘modern classics’ (e.g. 996/986, 997/987 models), as there seems to be great value throughout this range.
The ‘secret’ is the old story, choose the right one for your use and life, understand the condition so you can make an informed choice, and choose who you get advice from carefully noting whether they have the experience and expertise. By doing this you should be on your way to a very happy ‘marriage’ with a Porsche that suits and pleases.
Incidentally, even with the difficulties after Brexit, and the drama in the U.S, we have exported a 911 Targa to Canada, a classic to Austria, a GT3 to Australia, with many others going throughout the UK and Europe.
The workshop are seeing a steady flow coming in for maintenance, and our ‘special works’ at the back of our premises is busy preparing a selection of classic air cooled for motorsport adventures (see next week’s blog), whilst looking after a handful of 356 – some for maintenance and others for upgrades (12 volt, disc brakes, ). On the go we also have various engine and transmission rebuilds, whilst accommodating some longer term projects.
So, in our view…things are positive, but it’s a continually changing scene so we’ll keep you up to date with our views.
