The track day low-down
We have devised and enjoyed all sorts of crafty ways to enjoy driving our Porsche, as this is our business, and of course, our pleasure…and last last Friday we joined the Westcountry Porsche Drivers Club for a track day at the Castle Combe Circuit in Wiltshire.
So, what actually happens at a Westcountry Porsche Drivers Club track day?First of all, it’s like-minded people who love Porsche, and love driving them. But is comes with a big helping of socialising, with many of them getting together the evening before and staying near Castle Combe…talking Porsche is almost as much fun as driving them!
The next day, around 8.30 the majority arrived at the Castle Combe Circuit, ready to…not race, far from it…and perhaps this is what you were expecting?
It provides the opportunity to be on an wide open flowing ‘road’, able to take your car to a pace that would land you in hot water on public roads, and doing so in a safe environment, whilst enjoying the support and the friendship of like-minded people.
One of the key questions we get asked all the time is, do you race? Absolutely not! You don’t race, instead you go at whatever pace suits you. Typically, there may be 8 cars on track, but they are usually spread out over the course, you might get passed or you might pass another, but unlike F1, or the public road, you pass with the consent of the other car on the straight. Last minute do or die passing maneuvers are completely out.
Will I be Billy no mates? Nope, it’s a friendly affair, and there’s plenty of people to help and guide you on both the car set up, the track, or even tweaking something if needed.
Should you be worried about getting out on the track? Driving on track may be different to anything you have done before…but it’s fun and will create smile from ear to ear. If you want backup, it’s there when you need it! There’s always really useful to be guided around the track if you haven’t been before, and there’s always someone who’ll happily jump in beside you, someone that knows where the lines are. In addition, the circuit, usually have at very low cost, good instructors on hand.
Do you need a GT3 RS? Not at all, there will be a broad range of Porsche at any given track day. I saw broad smiles from our friends in the club with 997, 992, Cayman, a classic 911 3.2, and in a 986 Boxster tiptronic. They’re all fun, and very capable.
What do you need? Just a little enthusiasm and a sense of adventure! But also remember to check your basics, including tyres, pressures, oil, etc., and you’re good to go.
We enjoy mixing with Porsche enthusiasts, so we attended, and were there to help in any way we could, including sitting alongside if you wanted support.
This is just ONE way to enjoy Porsche, but we can recommend many other ways too, just speak to one of us and we’ll happily chat you through things you might not have thought of before.
The Westcountry Porsche Drivers club is well worth joining, so head over there now and become a member of the Westcountry Porsche Drivers Club – For the love of driving a Porsche.
