Last weekend Adrian and Richard took their pair of Williams Crawford liveried classic 911 to a hillclimb.
The location is Werrington park estate in Cornwall, the hillclimb has been run for decades by plymouth Motor Club. The course is a narrow strip of tarmac, a standing start, a fast curve to the right, and then accelerate uphill, around a gentle left curve, over the cattle grid and over the (blind again) crest into a tight left hander. Here the safety zone is a few tyres, a rhododendron bush and a nice Cornish wall. On through the right/left of the courtyard, again blind with plants, and on to a flat left/right kink, flat to the finish.
So, what’s it like in a 40+ year old 911? First our class…we entered rally car class, that meant the ex Peter Solberg Subaru WRX World Rally Car and various Escorts were in our class. The chap pitted next to us had his MkII Escort with 338 hp, and had moved the engine back and fitted a 7 speed sequential gearbox. That must be fast.
With negative thoughts dominating our brains we set off, the best of 3 runs count.
The 911, Adrian with 204 hp, Richard’s with about 245 hp looked rather underpowered for a hill climb against such might. Strange things happen though.
The 911 is fabulous off the line, has torque, has drive-ability and manoeuvrability…so it’s not to be dismissed. With a determined effort Adrian on the Saturday, he got to 41.32 seconds and Richard on the Sunday got to 41.72 seconds. That gave us a second, and a third.
Yes, the engines are in the wrong place…but it’s a Porsche – and therefore something special.
Keith Seume, former Editor of Classic Porsche came in his modified 914, with over 180 hp, less than a 1000kg that mid engined machine flew, it took Keith to a new PB for which he should be praised, a really good effort and were happy to be putting the Williams Crawford decals on that car.
Thank you to all our team who look after the cars, they were faultless, and thank you to the customers and friends that came to support.
If you fancy getting invloved whether in the road car class, on track or whatever, we are here to help.
