Werrington Hillclimb by Adrian Crawford
What happened at Werrington? Saturday was surprisingly dry, and we had plenty of spectators enjoying the motorsport on offer, we were also lucky enough to meet a few fellow Porsche drivers too.
The course initially had little grip in any section, so the idea was to make best use of every metre of tarmac, and trust me, keeping the 911 SC it flat over the cattle grid requires a good bit of mind over matter, and results in a rather short braking area with no ABS to help, with the red brick garden wall is always available to stop you.
Then it’s a mucky right left through the courtyard and accelerate towards the finish, short shifting to 4th gear through the kink in order to settle the car.
To give an idea of just how fast the track is, the hill record, set in 2021 by Phil Montgomery-Smith is 32.59 seconds, which is an average speed of over 77 mph. This is from a standing start with a ninety-degree, 10 mph bend in the middle!
For me in the blue 1981 3.0 SC it was a best of 42 seconds, only beaten in the rally car class by the Subaru WRC car, and a very quick Escort. For Richard in the GT3 Cup car, a run of 39 seconds gave him a superb win in the racing car class.
Sunday, despite a worrying forecast, the weather stayed nice, and the track improved by lunchtime, with both Richard & I achieving similar times to Saturday. Rob Kavanagh arrived for the Sunday with his similar 911 3.0, and Keith Seume borrowed our 3.0 SC rather than be destined to spectate, after an technical hiccup prevented him using his orange 914.
After a great weekend of motorsport, I’m pleased to say we all arrive home safe & sound and thank you to everyone who came along to say hello.
